Accurascale’s HBA, HDA and HMA hoppers

Accurascale’s collection of HAA family coal hoppers has expanded with the arrival of the HBA, HDA and HMA variants. MIKE WILD finds out what makes them stand out from the crowd.

THE HAA merry-go-round coal hopper is part of a complex series of wagon variations. The original HAA design was introduced in 1964 when the first of two prototype 45ton coal hoppers were built at Darlington Works. In total more than 11,000 were built with the final batch of 460 coded as HDA to reflect their ability to run at 60mph both loaded and empty.

The first versions of Accurascale’s new HAAs arrived in April 2022 with subsequent releases covering the CDA china clay hopper and MHA ‘Coalfish’ – rebuilds using HAA chassis to create spoil wagons. Now these have been joined the HBA, HDA and HMA variants which are on our review desk for inspection.
