Mark Chivers was invited by Accurascale to the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway (GWSR) to follow the behind-the-scenes process of what goes into creating an all-new sound file for their new 'OO' gauge GWR Manor.
ACCURASCALE announced its first 'OO' gauge steam locomotive, the Great Western Railway Collett 'Manor' 4-6-0 back in February 2021 and Hornby Magazine has been covering the project closely ever since. When we were invited to join the team for a sound recording day we jumped at the chance. The chosen engine for recording was Dinmore Manor at the GWSR.
The day began similar to a normal day at any heritage railway with lighting of the fire and preparation of the locomotive. Once the locomotive was ready and in steam it was coupled to its train ready for the days service, only we were the only passengers that day. Before departure, Accurascale's sound recorder Jamie Goodman installed microphones to key areas around the engine making sure he captured all sounds ready for the sound file.
