Few kits have been produced of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, so AFV Club’s new-tooled offering is likely to be popular with modellers, says Stu Fone
Better known for its armour and aircraft subjects, Taiwanese kit manufacturer AFV Club also produces a comparatively small number of ship kits, with its latest being a new-tool 1/700 Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate.

Along with the Knox class, the Oliver Hazard Perry (OHP, also known as Perry or Fig-7 after the lead ship’s designation of FFG-7) were a stalwart of the Cold War US Navy, being tasked with anti-submarine and anti-air warfare roles. From a recognition perspective they were easily identifiable by the thin superstructure that ran for almost two-thirds of the ship’s length and flared at the rear for a full-width helicopter hangar, plus the midship-mounted 76mm Oto Melara gun.
