Novice modellers will undoubtedly welcome Airfix’s all-new 1/72 P-51D Mustang (A55013), which is in the shops and online now. It offers plentiful detail but has simplified construction… and comes with a handy ‘shadow’ display stand. It can be built with wheels up or down, has a pilot figure and one-piece cockpit glazing; a full preview of this (and the company’s new Starter Set Bf 109F-4) is in the May 2024 cover date issue of Airfix Model Model World.

Markings for a single bare-metal airframe are supplied, the subject being 44-72719/N2 Constance of the 383rd Fighter Squadron, 364th Fighter Group, flown by Lt Col George F Ceuleers. It’s pleasing to see less-well-known unit being represented, even though the scheme is fairly simple… although a victory tally is painted on the fuselage. As usual with Starter Set format, acrylic paints, a brush and a small tube of Poly Cement are provided too, for just £11.99

Recce asset

Fans of Cold War jets have a splendid re-release in the form of Airfix’s 1/72 Supermarine Swift FR.5… which has not been reissued since its initial launch in 2015. This is a fine kit with delicately engraved panel lines, separate ailerons and flaps and a well-detailed cockpit. The same markings are supplied; both jets wear standard Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey upper surfaces, but the under surfaces are either in PRU Blue or Aluminium (the latter in reality being High Speed Silver):

•    WK281/S, Flt Lt Nigel Walpole, 79 Squadron, Gütersloh, West Germany, April 1956
•    XD972/W, II(AC) Squadron, Jever, West Germany, 1956
