LIMITED-EDITION SPITFIRE AND CHRISTMAS JUMPERS FROM AIRFIX

Airfix has announced a limited-edition Spitfire Starter Set in association with VisitBlackpool Illuminations... and its own Christmas jumper

Having sponsored the magnificent Spitfire Island sculpture – one of three brand new installations at this year’s Blackpool Illuminations – Airfix has recently produced 4,000 limited-edition 1/72 Spitfire kits based on this spectacular tribute to the type.

These exclusive products are available solely through the Blackpool Illuminations web shop and the Promenade-based Tourist Information Centre, at £19.99 plus postage. The 1/72 scale model of a Spitfire, complete with a bespoke Blackpool livery on its fuselage, is part of a special collaboration between VisitBlackpool and the kit manufacturer.

An Airfix spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to join forces with VisitBlackpool and become part of an event which, much like the scale-modelling hobby, has captured the hearts and imaginations of people for many years. We hope that showcasing the Airfix logo within the Illuminations will serve as a remarkable symbol of our commitment to precision engineering and the joy of model-making.”

The new installation at Blackpool, which will shine nightly until January 1, 2024 was designed by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and built by the Blackpool Illuminations team using 3D printing technology for the first time. The Spitfire Island installation is located on Gynn Roundabout in the midst of the six-mile seafront display and includes replicas of three Spitfires – Progress I, II and III – which were all based at Blackpool Airport during World War Two, and paid for by local residents.

Sticking with the festive theme, KMW can announce that Airfix is now offering its own Christmas jumpers. In sizes S/M/L/XL/XXL, the garments are in classic red and white; Airfix’s media visual shows repeated patterns incorporating the company logo, Spitfire planforms, snowflakes, stars, Christmas trees and reindeer heads (although the final design is yet to be finalised). They will cost £28, available direct from Airfix.
