The Spanish firm’s new Solution Book offers sage advice on painting and weathering urban constructions.
Dioramas can be daunting for the beginner but the new 72-page, multilingual publication from AMMO by Mig Jimenez will demystify the process. Ostensibly it’s a guide to various products by the company and how to employ them on a building… here, a 1/35 ruined church corner. However, you could achieve similar (if not the same) results with paints, pigments, washes and the like with items by different manufacturers – or indeed your own homespun versions.
The softback book follows a step-by-step path, showing which AMMO products to use at certain times and for particular tasks. Different symbols are employed as a quick guide throughout, even down to expected drying times so modellers can plan their work accordingly. Tasks from priming, hand-painting cobblestones and bricks, and masking – to painting and weathering interiors, producing realistic mortar, portraying wood realistically and even focusing on slate roof authenticity.
Multiple skills
There are many other techniques in between to learn and practise, but note that many facets of the narrative and visual instruction can be used separately on different projects. For example, you may have a slate roof on one building, but a brick wall as part of another scenic project. It’s all much more useful than you might initially think.
If you are wary or overawed by scale buildings, this is a good way to ease yourself into the genre. It’s by no means gospel, but helpful indeed for the beginner in showing the order of process for finishing an involved structure realistically. The book costs just €9.95 direct from AMMO-MIG.
