ICM’s Panhard armoured car is set among rugged terrain by Kev Smith, to create a partisan attack scene.
I often like to build height into a diorama, as it helps direct the observer’s eye over the scene, and can be used where horizontal storage space is at a premium.
In this case, the intent was to capture an attack by Partisans on an armoured car patrolling a Yugoslavian mountain pass. To replicate such a scene in its entirety was clearly impractical, so instead it was decided to build a tall and narrow diorama, this way inferring a steep mountainous area. Additionally, a rail track would cut across the landscape, with the height continued behind the focal point of the armoured car. Further drama would be suggested by positioning the car’s weapons at full elevation, facing an attack from an unseen enemy above.
