If you’re planning to build the MiG-21F/F-13/MF in 1/32 scale, ASK Distribution has interesting aftermarket decals, as CHRIS CLIFFORD discovers…

1/32 MiG-21 DECALS FROM ASK DISTRIBUTION

Fans of larger aircraft scales considering the MiG-21 as a build subject might like to consider the recent decal sheets from ASK Distribution. Key Model World has been sent three samples, and they’re suitable for dressing Revell or Trumpeter kits. They are as follows:

D32076 MiG-21F, MF Fishbed part 1 – Royal Canadian Air Force 441 Squadron (€19.80)

The schemes here were inspired by an audacious April Fool’s joke, detailing the bogus purchase of MiG-21 airframes by the Royal Canadian Air Force. The notional liveries all feature black chequered patterns on the vertical stabiliser/rudder, while one of the airframes sports the red lightning bolt artwork as seen on the CF-101 Voodoo. Amusingly, the airframes are stated as being stationed at ‘Gold Lake’ rather than the actual base Cold Lake, Alberta.  The options are:

•    MiG-21F, 59-315, 441 Squadron, 1960
•    MiG-21F, 59-328, 441 Squadron, 1960
•    MiG-21MF, 59-322, 441 Squadron, 1960

D32077 MiG-21F Fishbed part 2, US Air Force 4477th TES (TAC) unit (€11.60)
Here, ASK mixes the April Fool theme with real aircraft, although its dates for the real schemes are erroneous. The theme is that of the 4477th Test and Evaluation Unit, which was based at Tonopah, Nevada, to operate MiG-21s in an evaluation role, but also to act as the very first Aggressors for dissimilar air combat training. The first choice intimates that the airframe is ex-Canadian, on the joke theme already mentioned. The options listed are:

•    MiG-21F-13, 80965, 4477th TES, USAF, Tonopah, 1960
•    MiG-21F-13, 80955, 4477th TES, USAF, Tonopah, 1960
•    MiG-21F-13, Red 85, Lt Col Gail Peck, 4477th TES, USAF, Tonopah, 1960

D32078 MiG-21F-13 Fishbed part 4, Israeli Air Force 101 Squadron (€11.60)
The subject here is a MiG-21 captured and tested by the Israelis. The liveries are:

•    MiG-21F-13, 007 (ex-Syrian), 101 Squadron, Hatzor Air Force Base, June 1967
•    MiG-21F-13, 007, prior to its delivery to the US
•    MiG-21F-13, 007, exhibit of Chazerim Aviation Museum, Negev Desert

All these sheets are available direct from ASK Distribution, but also in the UK via Hannants.
