The Wickham trolley might not be a first choice as a ready-to-run model, but Bachmann has created a beautiful model all the same. MARK CHIVERS runs the rule over this miniature Type 27 variant.
It may have been a long time in development but Bachmann’s ‘OO’ gauge model of the diminutive Wickham railway trolley is here.
The first examples were built in the 1940s and more than 600 trolley cars were built by D. Wickham and Co. Ltd. They were used primarily for transporting engineering staff and materials to and from engineering possessions. Whilst there were many versions manufactured over the years, Bachmann’s new model is based on the prevalent Type 27 variant, as operated on BR metals.
For review we received two examples in BR maroon and BR engineers yellow, both based on 1950s prototypes. A third model in BR Engineers yellow with ‘wasp stripes’ (Cat No. 32-993) is also available.
On removal from its packaging you are instantly struck by this model’s tiny size in comparison to most ‘OO’ gauge models. Of course, this is as it should be but it’s even more amazing to think that this model is also motorised. As suitable space within the personnel carrier is effectively non-existen…
