LIKE ALL OTHER CHILDREN, as a small boy in the late 1950s I looked forward to Christmas with great expectation and excitement. It wasn’t particularly the thought of a figure clad in red and sporting a white beard delivering a multitude of gifts that excited me; what was more of interest was the three or four weeks that led up to the great day.
