Sweden’s Canfora Publishing has produced another volume of diorama inspiration and instruction by a true master of the art.
Per Olav Lund is renowned globally for his awe-inspiring diorama skills, and scenes that always tell an interesting story. His first book from 2015, A World of Dioramas via Canfora Publishing, offered a wealth of ideas and solid how-to advice. Thankfully, Volume II is now available from the same publisher, and there’s even more to get your teeth into – whether you wish to emulate the dioramas shown exactly, or simply use the methods imparted to form your own scale scenarios.
Twelve different projects are explored with gallery-style finished model shots, as well as in-progress images to take you on your learning journey; both the novice and more experienced modeller can benefit from what’s on the pages.
The models vary massively, from traditional World War One military scenes, to polar exploration, abandoned houses and caravans, Star Wars and even angling!
There really is something for everyone here, if you wish to create a large and complex scene, or just take little segments to enliven a small diorama or vignette. Per Olav’s imagination means we have a great guide to forming interesting scenes, but also to some of the more unusual products on the market and who manufactures them. Another useful feature is that the re-working of figures is shown extensively.
Each project opens with narrative on what inspired it, and how the diorama was planned. A standout item is the trout fisherman, with fly rod flexing, about to net his prey. However, as mentioned, there is huge variety here. This, coupled with Canfora’s high-quality design and coffee-table styling, makes the book desirable indeed. And it’s good value at 29.90 €, available direct from: www.canfora.se
