The Mk 3 carriage was one of the greatest designs ever produced for the railways of Britain and, although now almost 50 years old, it is heading for a new lease of life, thanks to the fitting of up-to-date features such as swing-plug and sliding doors. EVAN GREEN-HUGHES examines the latest developments.


Above: GWR has created four-car HST sets to offer improved passenger facilities on services between the South West and South Wales. On March 28 2018 43093 Old Oak Common TMD leads a four-car GWR ‘Castle’ set at Totnes forming the 6.36am Penzance-Exeter. All of GWR’s remaining HST sets now feature sliding doors, disabled accessibility and retention toilets. Colin Marsden.
