Building LNER ‘Quad-Arts’

The LNER articulated ‘Quad-Art’ coaches stood out from the crowd – and the arrival of a new 3D printed resin kit from Isinglass Models was too tempting to resist. MIKE WILD knuckles down to build a four-coach set for ‘OO’ gauge with a handful of modifications along the way.

Above: The LNER ‘Quad-Arts’ saw most of their careers in the hands of Gresley ‘N2’ 0-6-2Ts on the Great Northern line suburban workings, but in their final years they were also hauled by the ‘Baby Deltic’ Bo-Bo diesels. The finished ‘Quad-Art’ departs Topley Dale in the hands of one of the unreliable English Electric diesels.

THE LNER’s articulated carriages have always fascinated me, both the main line corridor stock and its utilitarian suburban coaches. The ‘Quad-Arts’ were high on my hit list of models to build and when Isinglass Models launched its new ‘OO’ gauge kit for the stock, it was an opportunity too good to miss.

Two types are currently available from Isinglass which model the diagram 476 Composite ‘Quad-Art’ and the diagram 467 all third ‘Quad-Art’ to allow a full eight coach formation to be assembled.
