CMK AIRCRAFT UPGRADES: MIRAGE, BEAUFORT AND MORE

The Czech company has released a fresh round of 1/72 resin aftermarket improvement sets, as CHRIS CLIFFORD reports.

CMK AIRCRAFT UPGRADES: MIRAGE, BEAUFORT AND MORE

Never a brand to dally in terms of keeping up with the latest kit releases, CMK has responded in kind to recent offerings from Airfix, Arma Hobby, Eduard and its own sister label Special Hobby.

First among Key Model World’s samples is set 7503 Ki-84 Hayate Cockpit (€8.30, above), designed to fit the new Arma Hobby model. A new, more refined cockpit floor is provided, along with separate sidewalls to replace the moulded detail on the kit’s inner fuselage halves. There’s also a instrument panel frame and photo-etched (PE) brass panel, a new seat, rudder pedals and a switch box in resin, while cockpit sills and seat harnesses come in PE. A printed acetate sheet with instrument dial detail completes the package, which is especially handy if you have just the standard Arma Ki-84, rather than the Expert Set.

On the subject of aircraft innards, CMK’s new set 7506 Beaufort Mk.I Interior (€14, above) is produced with Airfix’s new tooling in mind. This is an extensive array of replacement parts, which attach to the kit’s styrene cockpit/fuselage floor. These include seats, bulkhead detail for the front wing spar component, side consoles, throttles, the pilot’s control column and large sidewall sections. Throttle handles, seatbelts, the control yolk and instrument panel are in PE, and a printed acetate sheet offers dial features.

Catering for Special Hobby’s new-tool Mirage IIIC is set Q72401 Mirage IIIC Wheels (€5.30, above), in the Quick & Easy Line. This offers beautifully detailed resin mainwheels – with separate inner hubs featuring fine brake detail – as well as a nosewheel. For the same kit is Q72402 Mirage IIIC Atar 9B Engine Nozzle (€7). This resin item more sharply replicates the aircraft’s characteristic ‘eyelid’ afterburner arrangement.

Issued to enliven a scene with Eduard’s new-tool kit, CMK’s F72385 Avia S-199 Pilot and Mechanic (€8.30, above) provides two impressively cast resin figures saluting each other, as if during an aircraft handover. The pilot sports a parachute, leather flying helmet and goggles, and a superbly detailed flying suit, while the mechanic wears a one-piece coverall and a shoulder bag, presumably for the aircraft’s maintenance logbook. Both subjects have thin casting flash between the legs and under the arms, but once removed, you’ll have to highly convincing personnel to place with your S-199.

Lastly, CMK’s sister brand Special Mask has this new self-adhesive masking set (M72042 – €4.30, above) for Special Hobby’s recent reissue of the MPM Meteor T.7… therefore it’s suitable for either boxing. You get individual glazing coverings for the windscreen, canopy, and masks for the wheels in kabuki tape form.

All these handy items are available from CMK direct, but also Hannants in the UK.
