NEW BOOK ON ARADO’S ‘BLITZ’ JET BOMBER

Famed for being the world’s first jet bomber, the Ar 234 ‘Blitz’ is a tantalising subject for modellers, not just for its looks but also its fascinating – albeit short – career history. If you have kits from the likes of Dragon, Hobbycraft, Hasegawa, Fly, or re-boxings by Revell and Hobby 2000, the weighty new reference book under Crécy Publishing’s Classic imprint is invaluable… especially if you are building on a theme and incorporating the reconnaissance examples. This 320-page tome tells the whole story of the Blitz family and is penned by two heavy-hitters of the Luftwaffe research world.

Through insightful text and a wonderful collection of images, you learn about the Ar 234 from its inception, construction and development to its pioneering combat missions. The array of photographs is superb and modellers can glean a wealth of detail to help make their builds as authentic as possible. Views of open engine nacelle panels, cockpit features and even the early airframes’ landing skid arrangement are provided, but much more lies in the many general studies.

Varied content

Complementing the imagery and narrative are specially commissioned scale plans, factory drawings, tables, unit stories and excellent colour profiles/plan views. Close-up photos of other gear, such as recce cameras, night-fighter antennas, Walter rocket boosters, weaponry and other items all help to ensure realistic builds. More adventurous Luftwaffe fans eyeing conversion work have further gems in studies of the Ar 234 V6 on its substantial launch dolly (and scale drawings of the latter), as well as drawings and text detailing equipment that sat on the drawing board, or was built but not employed operationally (such as the Arado E.381 rocket fighter, to be carried under the wing of the Blitz).

Vignettes of individual pilots and personal accounts add colour and a welcome human element to the story. In its entirety this is a stunning examination of the Ar 234 which, if you are modelling across the variants, makes for a fascinating read. This is a reference goldmine and arguably destined to be the last word on the subject. The book costs £50 and is available from Crécy Publishing.
