Dapol is to produce all-new ‘OO’ gauge Great Western Railway (GWR) ‘28XX’/’2884’ 2-8-0s.
Built to a G.J. Churchward design, 84 ‘28XX’ 2-8-0s were built at the GWR’s Swindon Works between 1903 and 1919 for use on heavy freight traffic and were the first of their type to enter service on the railway. In the late 1930s, a further 83 locomotives were developed to a modified Collett design between 1938 and 1942.
Dapol unveiled plans for its all-new ‘OO’ gauge models at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s Cotswold Festival of Steam in May.
Eight models are planned initially including an exclusive limited edition of the 2874 Trust’s prototype which is presently under restoration at the heritage railway.
Currently at the design stage, the specification for the new ‘OO’ model includes a die-cast compensated chassis, high-torque motor, slide-in Printed Circuit Board (PCB) with Next18 Digital Command Control (DCC) decoder socket and solder-free speaker connection, push-fit electrical locomotive drawbar connection, firebox glow and detailed cab interior.
The manufacturer’s new tooling suite will also incorporate Churchward top feed boiler, original and later boiler support/motion bracket, vertical drop and curved drop footplates, Churchward (tapered) and Collett (straight) sprung buffers, GWR and BR smokebox doors and smokeboxes with inside or outside steam pipes.
