It’s time for a trip into the desert as Matthew Porter takes on Eduard’s 1/32 Bf 108 ProfiPACK boxing.
Designed as a sport/touring aircraft during the 1930s, Bayerische Flugzeugwerke’s (later Messerschmitt) Taifun subsequently served with the Luftwaffe in the liaison role. The Bf 108 had all-metal construction and the B-variant featured a single Argus As 10 air-cooled inverted V8 powerplant – a significant improvement over the Bf 108A. The nickname Taifun (typhoon) was bestowed on the type by well-known German aviatrix Elly Beinhorn. The aircraft was well-regarded for its range, handling, short take-off/landing characteristics and initial export sales were made to Bulgaria, Hungary, Japan, Romania, Soviet Union, Switzerland and Yugoslavia – eventually at least 20 countries operated the Taifun. Production was transferred to occupied France during World War Two and continued after 1945 as the Nord 1000 Pingouin.
