Creating the cover for model for Hornby Magazine 200

Marking the 200th issue of Hornby Magazine called for a special cover shot. RICHARD HALL reworked a Bachmann class 40 to mark the occasion in style with a unique headboard.

With Hornby Magazine celebrating its 200th issue, the milestone deserved a unique commemorative model to mark the occasion. The number alone of the first class 40, D200, instantly came to mind and replicating the locomotive also proved an interesting project.

D200 is historically important as the class leader of the successful English Electric Type 4, later designated Class 40. Class 40s continued in use through to the 1980s and gained an enthusiast following, leading to seven of the class entering preservation, including D200 by the NRM.

The career of D200 was neatly book-ended on the Great Eastern Mainline (GEML), firstly by hauling the first express passenger diesel service between Liverpool Street and Norwich in 1958, followed in 1988 by also hauling the ‘Final’ all-diesel London to Norwich service before the introduction of electrified class 86-hauled services o…
