If you’re looking for an interesting aircraft modelling theme, Malta-based Spitfires is a cracker… but you’ll encounter many conundrums. The Spitfire Mk.Vb, ‘Vc and ‘IXc wore different, non-standard colours and patterns when based on the island – and the identification of said shades is the source of much debate, assumption, presumption and misidentification. Euro Decals has seemingly, in part, taken its own path in suggesting which tones are appropriate, via its new sheet ED-72141, Supermarine Spitfires Over Malta.
Here, you receive complete sets of markings for nine different Spitfires in various colours and patterns, each with its own groupings of national insignia. Two machines are from the batch delivered to Malta by the carrier USS Wasp. Here, thoughts immediately turn to the argument that their non-standard colouring involved the en route application of US Navy ship/aircraft paints, to provide more suitable over-water camouflage.
