From mid-1940 to 1944, the Scout Bomber Douglas (SBD) Dauntless was the US Navy’s main carrier-based scout/dive-bomber. Best remembered as the type that delivered fatal blows to Japanese aircraft carriers at the Battle of Midway – 80 years ago in June 1942 – it earned its ‘Slow But Deadly’ nickname from its designation initials in this period. During its career the Dauntless proved an excellent naval scout, possessing considerable range, positive handling characteristics and good manoeuvrability.
