THERE WAS A VERY interesting item relating to the Great Eastern Railway’s ‘Jazz’ service in HM141. May I add a little detail to your pictures? The top picture on p109 shows an ‘F4’ leaving Stratford on a train from Ongar, the stock was built in 1912 especially for the Ongar Branch which had a far higher proportion of First Class travellers than the other suburban GER lines. These travellers were the real losers of the Central Line extensions to Ongar with replacement of their smart trains with bumpy tubes.
