Great Wakering Garden Railway: The first 40 years

Great Wakering, Flackwell
Heath and Whitefield Railway

The first 40 years

It's more than 40 years since Hornby Magazine’s photographer Trevor Jones made the first steps towards construction of his inspirational ‘OO’ gauge garden railway. Trevor brings the story of this ever-developing scale 2.75 mile long model railway up to date. Photography, Trevor Jones.

There is one great pleasure of garden railway modelling which stands out for me – space. No indoor layout that I could build would ever have the opportunity for scale length trains to run over such a large distance on a layout which incorporates three stations, a motive power depot, gradients, bridges, water features, crossovers and long plain track mainlines. It takes me as close to running a real railway as I can imagine.
