Hatton's has received the engineering samples of its new range of four and six-wheel carriages for 'OO' gauge. Join Mike Wild to see these coaches in more detail with photographs from our studio and a featured video showing them in action.

THE FIRST engineering samples of Hatton's collection of 'OO' gauge four and six-wheel carriages are here offering an insight into how the finished models will look. Like all engineering samples, these are being used to evaluate what needs to be done before moving onto the decoration phase and ultimately production. Features which Hattons have highlighted for revision include modifications to the interior lighting circuit and connections.

Six samples have been shown by the retailer covering a selection of vehicles within the range. The complete family will cover four-wheel five and four compartment coaches together with a four-wheel brake coach plus a five-compartment, four-compartment with lavatory and three-compartment brake coach with a six wheel underframe. The six-wheel chassis will also be used to model a full brake.

Highlights of the specification include turned metal wheels and buffers, etched metal steps, separately fitted handrails, small tension locks in NEM coupling pockets, options for lit and unlit carriages, suitability for use on a minimum of second radius curves and either Maunsell or three hole wheel types. There are also three types of roof to cover oil, gas and electric lighting.

The coaches take design cues from period vehicles, though due to the variety of designs they don't model a specific type. This is allowing Hatton's to produce a wide range of liveries on the carriages with the first round of releases for the second quarter of 2021 covering LBSCR mahogany, SECR crimson, GNR teak, GWR chocolate and cream, SR olive green, LNWR plum and spilt milk, LNER pre-war brown, LMS crimson lake and departmental colour schemes too.

Prices start from £30 for unlit vehicles and rise to £36 for coaches with interior lighting factory fitted. A four coach pack will also be available in each livery priced at £110 unlit and £135 with lighting.
