Heljan’s popular ‘OO’ gauge Class 57 Co-Co diesel returns in a selection of new identities and colour schemes. MARK CHIVERS takes a closer look.
HELJAN'S LATEST batch of releases model the original appearance of the Class 57/3s and 57/6s with flat cab fronts. While it is mechanically very similar to previous releases with centrally-mounted five-pole motor and twin flywheels, the manufacturer has taken the opportunity to upgrade the chassis with a 21-pin MTC Digital Command Control (DCC) decoder socket, together with a pair of PCB-mounted microswitches enabling the tail lights to be switched off while hauling a train and operating in analogue (DC) mode.
Nine different models form this production run in Virgin Trains silver and red (weathered or pristine), First Great Western (FGW) ‘fag packet’ green, FGW blue (a Gaugemaster retailer exclusive), GWR green, GWR lined green, ‘Northern Belle’ (West Coast Railways) maroon and cream, Network Rail yellow and Locomotive Services LNWR style lined black.
