Hills of the North – Spirit of Shap joins GETS 2023 line up

Graham Nicholas’ superb model of the West Coast Main Line climb to Shap is one of the latest layouts to be revealed for the 2023 Great Electric Train Show.

We are going back to the 1960s on the West Coast Main Line with Graham Nicholas’ stunning ‘OO’ gauge model railway Hills of the North – Spirit of Shap at the 2023 Great Electric Train Show on the weekend of October 14/15 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

This huge 30ft x 15ft layout models the famous climb with rolling stock changing through the sequence from the glorious 1930s through to the end of steam. Builder Graham Nicholas said: “The main line over Shap summit in the Cumbrian fells has been an irresistible draw for generations of railway enthusiasts. The layout attempts to recreate something of this atmosphere in the classic steam era, including a recreation of the banking arrangements that were employed to assist the heavier trains up the incline – the layout has been built on a gradient so that the trains really do have to climb the bank.”

Spirit of Shap isn’t the only layout being revealed for the Great Electric Train Show, as the weekend will also play host to Tony Harris’ Dublingham which models a goods yard with three-rail track fully ballasted and weathered. Plus we will also be welcoming back to the OO Live Steam Club with its running track and the opportunity to discover more about the Hornby Live Steam locomotives.

Tony Harris will be exhibiting his three-rail Dublingham goods yard which employs Hornby Dublo locomotives and rolling stock running on fully ballasted ‘OO’ gauge three-rail track.
