HEAVIER TRAINS running from London to Dover and Folkestone meant the Southern Railway needed new and more capable motive power in the mid-1920s to keep pace with its expanding operations. To meet these needs Richard Maunsell set about designing a four-cylinder express locomotive – the ‘Lord Nelson’ class – which went on to become the Southern’s most powerful 4-6-0.
