Modern modellers are in for a treat with the arrival of Hornby’s new collection of Mk 3 sliding door stock for GWR, CrossCountry and ScotRail HST formations. MIKE WILD inspects a full rake of GWR liveried vehicles.

THE BRITISH RAIL Mk 3 carriages must rate as one of the best passenger stock designs for long-distance travel of all time. The first entered service in the early 1970s on the prototype High Speed Train and later with the production HST Class 43 power cars on the Western Region while on the West Coast Main Line they were used for hauled day and sleeper trains. The Mk 3s have been in front line service ever since. However, times change and 2020 brought with it new regulations for disabled access which meant the original format was no longer suitable for further use on the railway.
