The arrival of Hornby’s all-new ‘TT:120’ Mk 2f coaches is brilliantly timed with the arrival of the Class 50 (see pages 72-75) in the same scale – and offers modellers an important option for locomotive-hauled stock on BR diesel era layouts.
The Mk 2fs were the final form of the Mk 2 and were built in three styles – FIrst Open (FO), Tourist Second Open (TSO) and Brake Second Open (BSO) from 1973 to 1975. Some debuted a new style of seating and all featured plastic interior panelling, automatic gangway doors and lower bodyside heaters.
Our review samples included examples of each vehicle type in BR blue and grey (Cat No. TT4017-TT4019) and InterCity ‘Swallow’ colour schemes (TT4020-TT4022) and certainly capture the appearance of the prototypes well. Detailing is impressive with tinted windows and differently-coloured interiors according to vehicle type – red for the FO and blue for the BSO and TSO in our samples – and each coach has a smooth roof profile with minor differences to roof hatches and ventilators, depending on the coach.
