Sound and smoke are now factory fitted with the arrival of Hornby’s steam generator Gresley ‘P2’ 2-8-2 2007 Prince of Wales. MIKE WILD takes this enticing new release for a spin.
If there is one thing which a model steam locomotive misses, it is steam. The driving force of steam locomotives is also one of their great charms and while it was once the preserve of specialist installers, you can now buy the first of a new breed of steam generator-equipped ready-to-run locomotives from Hornby.
Our review sample is Gresley ‘P2’ 2-8-2 2007 Prince of Wales in preserved LNER lined apple green livery. We’ve already taken a detailed look at the new breed of ‘P2s’ from Hornby in HM195 (2007) and HM197 (2002 and 2003) and the majority of the locomotive is as it was in the first edition of 2007. In fact, the only visible change from the outside is that the double chimney is now fully open to accommodate the steam generator steam flow from below, though there is an optional double chimney that can be clipped into place as well.
