With a new influx of models in this narrow gauge scale, DAN EVASON shows how you can create a grand scene the size of a pizza.
WITH A MAJOR influx of new and exciting ‘OO9’ gauge locomotives and rolling stock from Bachmann, Heljan and Peco recently, I have wanted to try my hand at building a new narrow-gauge layout for some time. The desire to develop a layout was further heightened with the discovery of a range of suitable 3D-printed buildings from MS Models. These delightful structures feature a realistic stone and slate finish, which will certainly look the part once painted and detailed.
With a busy household and a full-time business to run, as well as space limitations too, a large layout is out of the question at the moment, so the idea of a compact ‘OO9’ gauge layout certainly appealed. This was further refined after I happened across some impressive mini micro layouts during a search on the internet. Sometimes referred to as ‘pizza’ layouts due to their size and shape, what I really liked about these micro layouts was how quickly they could be built – and you could really go to town on the details and scenics.
