Installing Hornby’s Mk 3 Maglights

Hornby’s latest generation Mk 3 carriages have been designed with the manufacturer’s new magnetic switched lighting strips in mind. MIKE WILD adds a full set to a Blue Pullman HST set in ‘OO’ gauge.

Interior lighting adds a new level of interest to model railway rolling stock, particularly if you have the option for night running on your layout. To enhance its new range of BR Mk 3 carriages, Hornby has introduced a Maglight lighting strip which is simple to install.

The Maglights have been created with simplicity in mind. They are battery powered and each strip has ten LEDs as well as a magnetic reed switch and a magnetic block to operate the switch. The coaches have also been created with this system in mind down to a spare screw in the lighting support bar and a battery enclosure space in the underframe.

Installation takes around ten minutes per coach and starts with dismantling of the vehicle for access to its internal components. From here there is further dismantling required as the lighting support bar and seat moulding both have to be removed to complete the addit…
