STEP BY STEP: Paint fading techniques

You can almost taste the tobacco smoke and touch the threadbare upholstery as TIM SHACKLETON evokes the unique character of carriage stock from a bygone age using simple weathering techniques to fade the paint on a series of Hornby Maunsell carriages.


Above: Maunsell carriages were in service on the Southern Region into the early 1960s and carried BR carmine and cream as well as BR Southern Region green liveries. In 1959 rebuilt ‘West Country’ 34026 Yes Tor draws out of Margate with an up ‘Kent Coast Express’ for London led by a Maunsell three-car set framed with a pair of six-compartment brakes.
