INTERMEDIATE BUILD
A LIGHT IN THE DARK
Polish firm IBG Models’ recent 1/700 ships are a splendid way of transitioning from basic styrene kits to the use of photo-etched brass enhancements, as evidenced in its HMS Glowworm - built here by AMW's Stu Fone.
HMS Glowworm holds a place of renown within Royal Navy history, with its captain, Lt Cdr Gerard Roope one of just two people have received a Victoria Cross based on the evidence provided by an opponent (see Decisive Battle).
This article was inspired by an email from AMW reader Chris Findon, whose uncle – Stoker First Class Wilfred James ‘Jimmy’ Findon RN – was killed during the destroyer’s fateful encounter with the German cruiser Admiral Hipper on April 8, 1940.
