Heljan 'O' gauge 'Hymek' sound

Heljan Hymek in the garden.

HELJAN has refreshed its first British outline ready-to-run 'O' gauge locomotive - the Beyer-Peacock built Class 35 'Hymek'. The first issue was released in 2006 and, 14 years on, much has changed in the model railway industry. The new version is a refreshed model which features the same external good looks of the original combined with a reduce weight chassis, LED lighting, DCC friendly wiring, LED lighting and Heljan's latest generation motors.

For our review of the new 'Hymek' in HM155 we wanted to test the DCC friendly wiring which Heljan had equipped the model with by installing sound. The powerful twin five-pole motors mean this locomotive needs a suitable large scale decoder to handle their current draw and we knew we would be looking at the ZIMO range as the starting point. Our choice is an MX699KS decoder which features a built in stay-alive circuit to assist in running over any potential dirty railhead as well as 10 function outputs and plenty of power to drive the 'Hymek' on heavy trains.
