ITALERI’S 1/32 MACCHI MC.202 FOLGORE

Italian aircraft designs were world leading in the early to mid-1930s, but within just a few years the Regia Aeronautica realised it had been overtaken by developments in potentially hostile countries. Key to producing a new design was the need for a suitable engine. Examples of the German Daimler Benz 601 were imported and an agreement to license-build the powerplant was secured. Aeronautica Macchi had already manufactured the radial engine C.200 aircraft design, so this airframe was used as the basis for a conversion to an aircraft using the DB 601. The result was the C.202 ‘Folgore’ (translated as either Thunderbolt or Lightning), with the prototype taking to the air in June 1940.
