AERITALIA’S MINI-HERC

AERITALIA'S MINI-HERC

When it comes to Aeritalia’s G.222 (or C-27 in US Air Force service) there’s only Italeri’s 1/72 kit to choose from.

Italeri 1/72 Aeritalia G.222 C-27J Spartan

It has recently been re-issued as a ‘two-in-one’ boxing (1450), with parts to build either the early G.222/C-27A or later C-27J, the difference being the latter’s upgraded engines, propellers and nacelles. As such, it comprises 14 styrene runners (two more than previous versions due to the duplicated powerplant frames) with all parts moulded crisply and with no flash present on this sample. The detail is good, notably for the cockpit and cargo bay floor, but those wanting a lowered ramp may want to amend the otherwise bare interior. If the thought of a ‘two-in-one’ product may be off-putting, rest assured that Italeri has made all changes crystal clear, with steps specific to each type and/or markings scheme.

The standout element is the Cartograf-printed decal sheet, which supplies markings for US Air Force, Italian and Australian C-27s, plus a choice of two Italian Air Force G.222s. Colour quality is superb and the register is perfect, with strong opacity ensuring that underlying tones won’t be visible. While the finished model is smaller than a C-130, it still has considerable heft and presence and would make for an eye-catching addition to a display.
