Kazan Model Dynamics 1/48 F-14A Details
Tamiya’s 1/48 F-14 Tomcat is an impressive kit, but as CHRIS CLIFFORD discovers, it can be lifted to a whole new level with the detail sets from Kazan Model Dynamics
Renowned Japanese manufacturer Tamiya pleased many modellers with the release of its new-tool F-14A and D kits, in 2014 and 2016 respectively. As with any model, though, they can often be improved with additional details in resin, as in many cases this medium allows greater refinement… and the opportunity for aftermarket firms to offer something extra. That’s certainly the case with the items released by Kazan Model Dynamics.
The company has these two stunning detail sets, designed to fit Tamiya’s F-14s: Tomcat F-14A/B/D (KLG4814TAM ) and F-14A/B/D Avionic Bays (KAZ48009TAM). Providing a wealth of embellishment via 47 parts, the first package involves Kazan’s hybrid undercarriage legs, which feature polished steel cores to add strength, and effectively portray the metal oleo sections so prominent on the real legs (and on the actuators). Hydraulic lines are cast in situ for added realism, and there are three different mainwheel hubs. Torque scissors and other linkages, and the approach indexer unit, all come as separate items, while the landing lights are cast in clear resin.
Kazan’s Avionics Bays set, with its 53 resin and nine photo-etched (PE) brass components, is just as impressive, and allows what would effectively be a maintenance scene with many airframe panels removed. The bays are all for the forward fuselage and options are given so you can depict Tomcats from different time periods, due to sub-type nuances and retrofit activity. Areas such as the Port and Starboard Gull Panels are present, each with their individual avionics boxes cast superbly and with much detail. The LOX bay is also provided, and the PE fret holds parts to depict detail on panel interiors, and inner mounting frames.
Inevitably, you’ll have to cut away surface panels to accommodate this aftermarket fiesta, but experienced modellers shouldn’t encounter any problems as long as patience and care are practised. Ultimately, the extras in both boxes will help turn your Tomcat into a real showstopper; the landing gear set costs US $39.99, and the avionics $49.99. However, they are selling fast so don’t dally!
