Kernow Model Rail Centre announces LBSC/SR ‘Open A’

Kernow Model Rail Centre (KMRC) has announced an exclusive all new model of the London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) ‘Open A’ / Southern Railway (SR) Diagram 1369 and 1364 five-plank open wagons for ‘OO’ gauge.

KMRC has announced an all new LBSC/SR Open A wagon.

Starting life as the ‘Open A’, later to become SR diagram 1369, these were the most numerous LBSCR wagons, with more than 3,500 built between 1905 and 1926. Some were sent to the Isle of Wight and these survived longer than their mainland brethren which were all withdrawn by 1947. Isle of Wight wagons lasted well into British Railways ownership. Some wagons still exist, preserved on the Bluebell Railway and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

The design underwent various amendments with early examples having brake gear on only one side and ‘J’ diagonal framing with these wagons eventually being equipped with ‘Freighter’ style brakes on each side and a single vee hanger. Wagons built from 1912 had the diagonal strapping changed to be straight at the bottom end. Post-1914, double vee hangers were fitted with these mounted in front of or behind the solebar.

Both end types have been tooled for.

Wagons built from 1924 had square ends and no sheet rail and were categorised Diagram 1364. Some wagons with round ends had these cut down with some that had this modification also redesignated Diagram 1364. More than 450 were shipped to the Isle of Wight between 1924 and 1947. All of these bar the first 20 had square ends, with those later being modified accordingly.

KMRC’s tooling allows for a broad spectrum of wagons to be produced between the two main diagrams. The tooling will feature multiple styles of buffers, poseable sheet rail (where appropriate), square or rounded ends, SR or plain axle box covers, a highly detailed chassis, prototypical brake gear on all wagons, sprung metal buffers, etched brake handles that can be posed in the on position, three-link couplings and more.

19 different ‘OO’ gauge wagons across both diagrams are planned for release (see table 1) and are currently in production with prices set at £32.99 each. KMRC’s ‘early bird’ discount is available and wagons bought in advance are £29.99.
