Built in the late 1940s at BR Southern Region’s Lancing and Eastleigh Works, two experimental four-car EMUs were completed for trials on South Eastern Division passenger workings. Due to loading gauge issues, the units were restricted to services on the Dartford route to/from Charing Cross.

This latest four-car sample has had several revisions incorporated and has also received an application of green paint. Further amendments are expected before progressing to the next stage.
