Redbridge Wharf

Winchester Railway Modellers took on the challenge to build Redbridge Wharf - a layout based on the expansive sleeper works at Redbridge, Southampton, nestled alongside a busy main line railway. RICH SULZMANN tells the story.Photography, Mike Wild

In 2011 the Winchester Railway Modellers embarked on its most ambitious layout project yet. We had a 4mm continuous run layout in the clubroom, but realistically it was never going to meet exhibition standards, so we started planning for a replacement ‘OO’ gauge layout. We had the space, so we could go big. We needed something which would allow members to run stock on club nights but be good enough to be exhibited. It needed to be interesting to operate, develop the skills of the membership during the build, and keep us entertained for years to come.
