Gauge: ‘N’ | Period: 1955-1965 | Region: Eastern | Operating team: Hull Miniature Railway Society

THIS IS the latest project from the Hull MRS ‘N’ gauge group. It is an urban secondary terminus station, inspired by the former Hull and Barnsley Railway’s terminus at Cannon Street in Hull. The idea came from a wish do something a bit different to any of our previous layouts and the desire for it to be based on a local location.
Cannon Street station was built in 1885 and was intended to be a goods depot - the original intention was that much grander passenger facilities would be located in the centre of town at Kingston Square, however this was abandoned because of the cost involved, and the carriage sheds located at Cannon Street were converted into the terminus station.
At the grouping in 1923 the Hull and Barnsley Railway became part of the LNER and in July 1924 all passenger services were diverted to the ex-NER Paragon station, though goods services continued to use Cannon Street until June 1968. During the 1960s and ‘70s the area was cleared of most of the domestic residences which were demolished. The area is now home to an engineering works and a College.
We hope we have captured the run down nature of this part of the city in the final years of steam. All the buildings and major features on the layout are closely based on prototypes from the area, though some compression, repositioning and simplification was necessary for practical and logistical reasons. This means that it isn't an exact replica of Cannon Street, hence the change of name to the road which runs along the front of the layout.
The layout is set in the 1955-1965 transition era. Unlike the real Cannon Street, it is assumed some local passenger services continued to use the station alongside the main traffics of parcels, perishables and coal.
The layout uses the new ‘Finetrax’ ‘N’ gauge Code 40 track for the scenic area while Peco track is used for the off-scene areas. Rolling stock is a mix of suitable ready-to-run and kit-built items from all the main manufacturers.
