LNWR 'Improved Precedent'

Locomotion Models and Rails of Sheffield have revealed a brand new 'OO' gauge model of London North Western Railway (LNWR) 'Improved Precedent' 2-4-0. The model is being made by Bachmann and is due for release in Summer 2021.

Precedent

The LNWR 'Improved Precedent' was introduced in 1887 by Webb for express passenger service. 158 were built by 1901 at Crewe Works and they were seen across the LNWR main line network. One, 790 Hardwicke, set a new record for the journey from Crewe to Carlisle in 1895 during the races to the north and has been preserved as part of the National Collection. It is currently on display at the Railway Museum's Locomotion museum in Shildon.

Withdrawals started in 1905, but more than 70 remained in service at the 1923 grouping to become part of the newly formed London Midland and Scottish Railway's (LMS) stock where they were classified '1P'. Hardwicke was one of the locomotives to remain in service - it was reboilered in 1926 and withdrawn in 1931 - while the last were taken out of service in 1934.

The all-new Bachmann-produced model of the LNWR 'Improved Precedent' class is the first ready-to-run 'OO' gauge 2-4-0 tender locomotive and uses a combination of die-cast metal and injection moulded parts. The specification includes a 21-pin decoder socket in the tender, a factory fitted speaker, turned metal wheels, NEM coupling pockets with small tension lock couplings, a coreless motor and the option for either traction tyre or non-traction tyre fitted driving wheels with each version. Detail differences are also accounted for in the tooling including changes to the safety valves, buffers and tender. It will also have a fully detailed cab interior, working fallplate, removable metal coal load and more.
