West Coast Cement's locomotive fleet

Turning the clock forward from our usual 1950s subjects has meant developing a new roster of locomotives and rolling stock for our project layout, West Coast Cement. Mike Wild reveals how this new ‘OO’ gauge fleet has been created to represent the 1995-2005 period.

PRESENTING ANY new layout brings its own challenges when it comes to locomotives and rolling stock but when we selected the 1995-2005 period for West Coast Cement we had to think long and hard about how we would stock it even before we started laying track. Fortunately both Mark Chivers and I are great collectors and over the years we have amassed large rosters which cover areas well outside the main time period that we have portrayed on Hornby Magazine’s exhibition layouts so far.

The 10 year period we had chosen initially - it has since expanded - offered great scope for variety. We could represent outgoing BR sectorisation period liveries including InterCity, Regional Railways and Railfreight triple grey as well as covering the first shadow privatisation colour schemes of Mainline blue, Transrail branded triple grey and, a personal favourite, Loadhaul black and orange.
