The short and winding road

A veritable spider’s web of country lanes links villages and farms in the countryside. DAN EVASON shows how to model one in 4mm scale.

Leave any busy town or city behind and you will soon find yourself out in the open countryside with rolling hills, fields, woodlands and away from the main roads, single-track winding lanes.

Usually hemmed in by hedges, fences or walls on either side, they often follow ancient field boundaries and rights of way, and the variety of surroundings is near infinite.

Above: For his latest diorama, Dan Evason has developed a delightful 4mm scale country lane scene.

While mostly used by farmers and people driving to and from villages in the area, from a modelling point of view they are great for linking scenic areas as they can be squeezed into the tightest spots or era of layout. These narrow, sometimes overgrown lanes can also be made in a way to fool the eye into believing they go somewhere off-scene with some cleverly placed trees to hide the view.
