VIGGEN REFERENCE: SPLINTER, SPECIALS AND MORE!

A new book from Mushroom Model Publications offers bags of inspiration and reference for anyone building SAAB’s famous ‘System 37’ Viggen aircraft.

VIGGEN REFERENCE: SPLINTER, SPECIALS AND MORE!

Colour artwork has always been popular with modellers, for helping to choose liveries and getting the little details just right. On of the most established and popular artists is Richard J Caruana, whose work has graced literally hundreds of modelling magazines and books over the years.

His latest venture is a series focusing on individual types, and it begins with the mighty Viggen… Sweden’s singular aircraft design, which was adept at various roles. In landscape format, and at 38 pages, it’s not a weighty tome by any means, but it is handy indeed if you want good-quality artwork to inspire your choice of scheme, check camouflage patterns, and the like. It is a shame that the two plan views of splinter-pattern Viggens are very small. Arguably, it would have been better to allow one of these views to fill a single page, for greater clarity.

The inside-front cover features excellent 1/72 drawings showing AJ 37, SK 37 and JA 37D, with scrap views of the SF 37 forward fuselage. A brief history follows, with six images, before the format shifts to the colour artwork, with 50 individual aircraft being represented. Jets in the classic Swedish splinter, earlier aluminium, and late-service greys grace the pages. Pleasingly, selected airframes wearing special schemes are afforded several different views on a page.

Another good aspect is that the weaponry shown on the artwork is correctly sized/proportioned… this isn’t always the case on artwork of this nature, and it spoils the view in question. The book closes with smart renderings of unit badges on the inside back cover.

VIGGEN REFERENCE: SPLINTER, SPECIALS AND MORE!

If you're a died-in-the-wool Viggen or Swedish Air Force enthusiast, you may already have enough reference on the type, but this book still offers the occasional surprise in terms of less-well-known airframes. However, if you are new to the Viggen, this reasonably priced reference (£14) offers useful and enjoyable content. It’ll have you searching for various kits and decals in short order!
