MODEL ART’S NEW FINNISH AIR FORCE DECALS

Lancashire-based Model Art has released superb 1/72 markings for Avro Ansons, Fouga Magisters and Fieseler Storchs flown by Finland.

MODEL ART’S NEW FINNISH AIR FORCE DECALS

Model Art Decal System is renowned for its well-researched decals and detail-laden instructions. This recipe for success certainly applies to the new markings released under Model Art’s Galdecal sub-brand. Sheet 72/012 Finnish Air Force provides three schemes for the Fieseler Storch 156K, five for the Avro Anson Mk.I and seven for the graceful Fouga Magister.

Wide time span

The provision of pre-war, World War Two and post-war liveries boosts the usefulness of this sheet, which is neatly printed on thin, gloss carrier film. The subject time span means Blue Swastika markings, as well as the post-war blue and white roundels are supplied, and Day-Glo striping for the Magister is impressively eye-popping.

Colour-wise, it’s natural metal all the way for the Magisters, while the Ansons wear classic Finnish Olive Green over Light Grey/RAF Sky Grey (two also having yellow Eastern Front yellow on the outer wing undersides). The Storchs are in Olive Green with light grey wing undersides (two of the three sport white rudders). The schemes are:

•    Storch ST-113, Air Force HQ, Siikakangas, June 1941
•    Storch ST-112, Air Force HQ, Tampere, February 1943
•    Storch ST-112, probably Air Force HQ, Siikakangas, circa 1955
•    Anson AN-101, LLv 44, Immola, 1936
•    Anson AN-103, PleLv 46, Luonetjärvi, 1936
•    Anson AN-102, LentoR 4, Luonetjärvi, 1939
•    Anson An-102, LeLv 48, Luonetjärvi, 1942
•    Anson An-101, IImavE, Luonetjärvi, 1944
•    Magister FM-1/1, HävLLv 13, Luonetjärvi, 1959
•    Magister FM-25, HävLLv 31, Halli, 1984
•    Magister FM-27, KoulLLv, Halli, 1982
•    Magister FM-40, HävLLv 31, Rissala, 1975
•    Magister FM-52, HävLLv 21, Rissala, 1975
•    Magister FM-65, IImaSK, Kauhava, 1968
•    Magister FM-66, TLeLv, Halli, 1982

There’s plenty of choice here, and the Magisters are especially attractive… but all should appeal to modellers who favour aircraft flown by Scandinavian air arms, or Finland in particular. Ample scheme information is on the instructions, along with historical notes; ideal recipient kits are the Academy or Airfix Storch, Special Hobby or Airfix Anson and Heller/Special Hobby Magister.
