Hornby Magazine’s Assistant Editor MARK CHIVERS reveals his model railway journey from Tri-ang’s Big Big Train to the present day.

Visitors to exhibitions will regularly find me (far left) at the controls of Hornby Magazine’s layouts. This is Grosvenor Square at the Great Electric Train Show in 2018.

I THINK MY FASCINATION with railways harks back to when I was a toddler, visiting Guildford station with my dad to watch the trains pass. I also vaguely recollect a trip on a veteran BR Southern Region Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) at the time, which helped plant the seed that has remained with me forever. I was the tender age of three when I received my first ever train set - Tri-ang’s Big Big Train - and it seemed huge at the time.
