MORE GERMANS UNDER THE WAVES
The U-Boot Im Focus periodical series is a reference goldmine for modellers interested in Germany’s World War Two U-boats. Here’s a glimpse of Edition 18…
With the many more styrene U-boat kits now available, from manufacturers such as ICM, Revell, Hobby Boss and others, maritime modellers with such leanings are well served. However, reference material is always useful when building any model, and it’s certainly the case with Luftfahrtverlag START’s series U-Boot Im Focus series. These softback A4-sized periodicals offer superb, well-researched history and excellent imagery, which inspires and informs.
Issue 18 has fascinating narrative on various U-boat subjects, such as the Type VIIC and Type XXI vessels, the emblem of U-629, and German submarines in the Spanish Civil War (featuring excellent colour artwork). There’s also coverage of the operations conducted by U-766, and photos of an on-the-surface meeting between a Type VIIC and a Type IIB, offering useful deck/structure detail for modellers.
If you enjoy knowing the history behind your chosen modelling subjects, U-Boot Im Focus offers engaging reading and splendid reference. Note that the publisher also offers water-slide decals for U-boats in 1/144, 1/72 and 1/35 scales, based on the content in editions of UIF. Issue 18 costs 19.60€ and has 54 pages.
