If you fancy building a P-51D Mustang, EagleCals’ new decal selection offers four smart USAAF schemes worth considering.

EAGLECALS NEW P-51D DECALS

It’s arguable that in terms of USAAF World War Two fighters, the North American P-51 has been catered for the most by aftermarket decal firms. There’s no sign of this stopping either, exemplified perfectly by EagleCals’ new decal sheet EC#189, P-51Ds in Europe. Four different airframes are represented, one minus the usual dorsal fin fillet, and three are overall bare-metal machines. All have nose art – famous aces mounts being present too. They are:

•    P-51D-5-NA, 44-13692/LC-X Sandy, Capt Cartheledge L Huey Jr, 20th Fighter Group, King’s Cliffe, Northamptonshire, October 1944 onwards
•    P-51D10-NA, 44-14426/L2-W SCAT #5, Lt Robin Olds, 479th Fighter Group, Wattisham, Suffolk, 1944
•    P-51D10-NA, 44-14230/YF-T Trigger III, Capt Walter Gresham Jr, 355th Fighter Group, Steeple Morden, Hertfordshire, circa September 1944
•    P-51D-25-NA, 44-73144/WR-A Man O’ War, Col Claiborne Kinnard Jr, 355th Fighter Group, Steeple Morden, Hertfordshire, 1944

With 44 ‘kill’ markings worn collectively across three of the airframes, this is a fascinating collection of schemes, representing the cream of the Eighth Air Force. It’s also possible that decals for 20th FG Mustang Sandy at least have previously never been produced in decal form. The 1/48 sheet costs $21 direct from Eagle Editions, but the markings are also available in 1/72 and 1/32 scales, at $17 and $25 respectively. These decals should also be available at Hannants in the UK.
