New Special Hobby 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

Chris Clifford lifts the lid on Special Hobby’s all-new 1/32 tooling of the fascinating, yet unsuccessful Westland Whirlwind fighter

Special Hobby 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

Czech firm Special Hobby has pleasing form for producing aircraft in 1/32 scale. Previously, types such as the Hawker Tempest, Mitsubishi A5M Claude, Brewster Buffalo, P-39 Airacobra, Bloch MB.152 and Curtiss Hawk have all appeared from this manufacturer, much to the applause of modellers who favour large scales… even though the earlier limited-run items sometimes mean trickier assembly. The appearance of the 1/32 Whirlwind is extra special though, considering kits of the type across all scales are few and far between; Special Hobby’s rendition is the first styrene example in this scale (there were two vacform kits, years back, now long out of production), and depicts the F Mk.I variant (kit 32047, branded ‘Cannon Fighter’).
